As more and more people turn to acquiring SSDs in favor of hard drives which, as a reminder, could disappear by the end of the year, some users of portable SSDs from the SanDisk brand have experienced some worries during the last four months.

The problem was initially reported by users of the Reddit platform in early 2023. Other users complained that the brand’s Extreme V2 and Extreme Pro V2 portable SSDs suddenly erased data and in some cases became unreadable. The issue is believed to have affected a recent batch of drives manufactured after November 2022.

SanDisk SSDs victims of a big failure, a new firmware is coming very quickly

Until now, SanDisk had not reacted publicly and invited users to open a support ticket with the technical team. But four months after the bugs encountered by users, Western Digital (parent company of SanDisk) finally wanted to communicate on this subject:

Western Digital is aware of reports that some customers have experienced an issue with SanDisk Extreme and/or Extreme Pro 4TB Portable Solid State Drives (part numbers SDSSDE61-4T00 and SDSSDE81-4T00). We have fixed the issue and will post a firmware update on our website soon. Customers who have questions or encounter any issues are encouraged to contact our support team for further assistance.“, said Western Digital with the media Ars Technica.

In view of the response given by Western Digital, users of the Extreme and Extreme Pro SSDs may be disappointed since the brand has not announced any specific date for the firmware update. The bugs could therefore still persist and some owners of faulty SSDs would be likely to acquire another model from a competing brand.
