The EU plans to deploy a network of satellites to improve connectivity

The European Union is planning to deploy a satellite systemin which he plans to invest some 6 billion of euros, for help improve connectivity and eliminate their problems at certain points in the region. Also to ensure the continuity of the security of sensitive communications, as well as of the intelligence systems of the EU and the countries of the region.

From Brussels they point out that satellite infrastructure is increasingly important for governments, industry and society. Therefore, its space strategy must reflect the new challenges it faces, in addition to adding technological developments and advances. The proposed system would also offer more resilience and protection for surveillance and defense tasks, among other activities. All this while ensuring a high level of connectivity without interruptions, effective in costs, for areas where coverage is poor, or bad.

This European Union satellite network is also seen as a system to connect rural areas where there is no connectivity, either fixed or mobile, for economic or logistical reasons. These areas, known as Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks, are known to offer numerous advantages in connection speed and latency for these areas over conventional technology.

The expansion of this satellite network would support the digital services available in the area, and help remove current connectivity impediments to achieving the region’s digital single market. In addition, it would bring notable benefits to the EU economy, which its authorities estimate at around 17,240 million euros. It would also boost technological development, and allow job creation in the aerospace sector.

Furthermore, the European Union has proposed a new framework for space traffic managementstating that a new approach is already needed for it, due to the increasing number of satellites already in orbit.

Margrethe Vestager, Vice President of the EUhas highlighted that «space technology is essential to our daily lives and security. Today’s initiatives will ensure secure and efficient connectivity at all times. It is beneficial for both citizens and governments. It will play a key role in the digital transformation of Europe, and will make us more competitive. I hope that an EU approach to space technology and space traffic management will ensure safe and sustainable use of space in the long termor”.
