The importance of the passwords we use to protect our platforms, programs and devices has not stopped growing over the years. The reasons for this are given by the increase in potential attacks and because we are increasingly working with more sensitive and private data. In parallel, the use of these elements by managers has also grown, as is the case with 1Password.
It is more than likely that most of you are aware that we are increasingly using a greater number of our own access codes. In addition, as experts warn us, these must be as robust and complex as possible. This significantly complicates memorizing all these security elements that we use on a day-to-day basis. Precisely to facilitate this type of task, we can use those known as password managers.
This type of program in particular is responsible for storing our personal keys under a master key. This allows us to remember only the latter in order to access secure storage of the rest of the passwords. At the same time, they offer us a series of additional functions to facilitate the use and access to these security elements. For example, integrate with our internet browser favorite so that it can perform autofill functions.
As you can imagine, we will no longer have any excuse when using complex keys to protect the credentials of our platforms and programs. In addition, and how could it be otherwise, these tools include a series of protection functions due to the type of content they must work with. In this case, we are going to talk about some of the features of 1Password to carry out this type of password management tasks.
1Password security features
As we mentioned before and is usually common in this type of program, the internal database that we create is protected by a skeleton key. This is the key that we must remember in order to access all saved passwords in the future. This element is present in 1Password, as expected. Something that we must take into account is that on the platform that we mentioned, the master key is not stored together with the rest of the passwords.
At the same time we must know that it is not transferred over the internet at any time in order to safeguard its security to the maximum. Similarly, on the other hand, we find the functionality called Secret Key, a protection element that is created locally on our computer. It is combined with the aforementioned skeleton key and is used for authentication with servers from 1Password. Likewise, we make use of this other security element for encryption from the database with the rest of the saved passwords.
It’s also important to note here that our personal 1Password account uses the SRP method to authenticate credentials without sending them online. With everything and with it, the platform uses a encryption system with all traffic which is sent to the firm’s servers. Thus, in the event that this data is intercepted, the attacker will not be able to access its content.
